What triggers ferroptosis?

Posted August 22, 2024

Answer

Ferroptosis is triggered by the imbalance between the generation and degradation of intracellular lipid ROS. Cells have powerful inbuilt defense mechanisms that help maintain cell survival. When these defense mechanisms become faulty or malfunction, the antioxidant capacity of cells gets compromised. This causes unchecked accumulation of lipid peroxides to toxic levels, which damages membrane integrity and causes oxidative cell death through ferroptosis.
