What role does mitochondria play in ferroptosis?

Answer
Ferroptosis is a novel type of cell death that involves the metabolism of lipid, iron, and amino acid. It is triggered by the production of lipid peroxides through an excessive accumulation of iron. Mitochondria plays a critical proactive role in mediating ferroptosis signaling pathways and ferroptotic death by fueling metabolism and production of lipid ROS (reactive oxygen species). Several studies show that mitochondria possess antioxidant and iron regulation systems, which are integral in iron and redox homeostasis.
