What is ferroptosis?

Posted August 22, 2024

Answer

Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death. It occurs when the lipid peroxides accumulate on cell membranes and build up to toxic levels. Lipid peroxides are generated through normal metabolic activities. Excessive buildup of lipid peroxides can lead to oxidative damage to cell membranes. This cell-death process is iron-dependent and is characterized by the accumulation of iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS)
