What features do cells show when they undergo ferroptosis?

Posted August 22, 2024

Answer

Ferroptosis is a type of regulated cell death that results when lipid peroxides accumulate on cell membranes at toxic levels causing oxidative damage to cell membranes. Cells that undergo ferroptosis show a combination of morphological and biochemical features.

Morphological features that cells exhibit when they undergo ferroptosis include:

  • Rupture of cell membrane rupture
  • Swelling of cytoplasmic organelles
  • Mitochondrial shrinkage with increased density of mitochondrial membrane
  • Reduction or absence of mitochondrial cristae
  • Rupture of outer mitochondrial membrane
  • Moderate chromatin condensation

Biochemical features that cells exhibit when they undergo ferroptosis include:

  • Excessive accumulation of iron
  • Lipid peroxidation and toxic buildup of lipid peroxides on cell membrane
