Answer
Ferroptosis is a novel type of regulated cell death. Main characteristics of ferroptosis that differentiate it from other forms of cell death include:
- Imbalance between the production and degradation of intracellular lipid and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
- Elevated levels of intracellular iron and ROS
- Decreased levels of antioxidants, which leads to oxidative cell death
- Mitochondria appear smaller than normal and have condensed mitochondrial membrane densities and ruptured outer mitochondrial membrane
- Mitochondrial cristae are reduced or absent
- Nucleus lack chromatin condensation although it retains its normal size
- Cell membrane is ruptured and blebbed
