What are the main characteristics of ferroptosis?

Posted August 22, 2024

Answer

Ferroptosis is a novel type of regulated cell death. Main characteristics of ferroptosis that differentiate it from other forms of cell death include:

  • Imbalance between the production and degradation of intracellular lipid and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
  • Elevated levels of intracellular iron and ROS
  • Decreased levels of antioxidants, which leads to oxidative cell death
  • Mitochondria appear smaller than normal and have condensed mitochondrial membrane densities and ruptured outer mitochondrial membrane
  • Mitochondrial cristae are reduced or absent
  • Nucleus lack chromatin condensation although it retains its normal size
  • Cell membrane is ruptured and blebbed
