What is the process of centrifugation?

Answer

Centrifugation is a mechanical process that works on the principle of sedimentation. The process uses centrifugal force to separate solids or denser particles from a solution based on their physical properties such as density, shape, size, and viscosity. It is also used to separate two liquids in a mixture.

The process of centrifugation is carried out in a centrifuge, a specially-designed machine that has a central rotor.  The sample is placed in a special holder or vial in the centrifuge machine and rotated rapidly around an axis. The rapid rotation creates a centrifugal force that separates the components in the sample, with the less dense components moving towards the axis (toward the center) and the denser components moving away from the axis (toward the periphery).
