What happens during a redox reaction?

Answer
In this type of reaction, the oxidation state of a molecule, ion or atom changes due to the gain or loss of electrons. During these reactions, the substance that donates electrons becomes oxidized, while the substance that accepts electrons becomes reduced. Oxidizing agents attract electrons strongly and cause other substances to be oxidized. In contrast, reducing agents readily give up their electrons and cause other substances to be reduced.
