How do I determine if a particular reaction is a redox reaction?

Answer
Redox reactions can be identified by monitoring changes in oxidation numbers, which are assigned to atoms based on the assumption that all bonds are ionic. In these reactions, the element that is oxidized will see an increase in its oxidation number, while the element that is reduced will experience a decrease. Additionally, single-replacement reactions are considered redox reactions since they involve two elements where one exists as a free element (with an oxidation number of zero) on one side of the equation and as part of a compound on the other side. This indicates a change in oxidation number.
