What are oxidizing and reducing agents?

Oxidizing agents are substances that gain electrons in a chemical reaction and, in doing so, cause other substances to lose electrons (oxidation). It is also known as the electron acceptor. Reducing agents donate electrons in a reaction, leading to the reduction of other substances (gain of electrons). It is also known as the electron donor.
