What are the similarities between oxidation and reduction reactions?

Both oxidation and reduction reactions involve the transfer of electrons between substances. In a redox reaction, oxidation and reduction always occur together. Both processes result in changes to the oxidation states of the reacting species. They also both involve agents that facilitate these reactions.
