There are several important pharmacological effects of psoralen. Psoralen is used in combination with UVA radiation (PUVA therapy) to treat various dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and certain types of skin nodules associated with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Thus, it possess anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Psoralen is important since it enhances the absorption of UVA light by the skin. Once absorbed, it interacts with human DNA and subsequently reduces skin inflammation. It also possesses anti-osteoporosis. Studies have shown that psoralen increases the gene expression levels of osteoblast-specific markers such as GLUT3, osterix, Col-I, osteocalcin, and bone sialoprotein. It also boosts alkaline phosphatase activity and increases colony formation in fibroblasts and the differentiation of osteoblasts. Psoralen also possess anti-bacterial properties. Research has shown that psoralen effectively inhibits the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, suggesting its potential as a treatment against tuberculosis. Psoralen also inhibits the growth of Phytophthora cinnamomi mycelia. This indicates that psoralen could be utilized as a pesticide. This compound also inhibits the formation of bacterial biofilms and reduces their viability.
