What is the significance of mitochondrial fission and fusion?

Posted June 6, 2024

Answer

Mitochondrial fission and fusion are significant for several reasons. One reason is because they ensure that mitochondria work effectively to provide the cell with energy. They also serve as mechanisms for sharing mitochondrial contents, helping to replace damaged or lost components within the organelles. This occurs when a damaged mitochondria fuses with a healthy one. Additionally, the balance between fission and fusion regulates mitochondrial morphology and homeostasis within the cell. Lastly, mitochondrial size and shape alterations are frequently associated with the processes of fission and fusion.
