How do mitochondria divide?

Posted June 6, 2024

Answer

Mitochondria divide through binary fission. When division is needed, cytosolic Drp1 is recruited to the outer mitochondrial membrane via specific receptors. Drp1 then forms helical filaments around mitochondrial tubules, constricting and dividing them with the help of ER tubules and actomyosin filaments. Adaptor proteins at sites of constriction recruit Drp1. Ultimately, this process leads to the division of one mitochondrion into two daughter mitochondria.
