Mitochondrial fusion refers to the merging of two mitochondria into a single organelle. The process is primarily regulated by mitofusins. In contrast, mitochondrial fission involves the division of a single mitochondrion into two separate organelles. The two proteins which facilitate this process are Fis1 and Drp1.
