What are the properties of muscular tissues?

Posted June 25, 2024

Answer

The four properties shared amongst all muscular tissues are: excitability, contractility, elasticity, and extensibility.

  1. Contractility is the capacity of muscle cells to generate force by shortening; it permits muscles to exert pulling forces on their attachments, allowing movement to occur.
  2. Elasticity refers to the capability of muscles to return to their original length and shape after being stretched or contracted.
  3. Extensibility refers to the ability of muscles to stretch or extend beyond their resting length.
  4. Excitability refers to the responsiveness of muscle cells to stimuli, whether from neural impulses or hormonal signals. It's the ability of muscles to receive and react to signals that initiate contraction.
