What are the functions of muscular tissues?

Posted June 25, 2024

Answer

The three primary types of muscular tissues are skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle.

  • Skeletal muscle is the specialized tissue attached to bones, facilitating movement and supporting the musculoskeletal system. It functions in opposing pairs and is under conscious control, making it voluntary.
  • Smooth muscle forms layered sheets that contract rhythmically along the length of the structure. Smooth muscle functions involuntarily.
  • Cardiac muscle contracts and relaxes rhythmically to pump blood throughout the body. Like smooth muscle, cardiac muscle operates involuntarily as it coordinates the heartbeat.
