Tris acetate EDTA (TAE) and tris borate EDTA (TBE) are the two buffers of choice for gel electrophoresis for two main reasons. Both have the ability to conduct electricity due to their concentration of hydrogen ions. Additionally, both maintain fairly stable pH levels.
