What are the branches of immunology?

Posted November 7, 2023

Answer

Immunology is a branch of biology that focuses on the study of the immune system in humans and animals. It is categorized into 8 main branches that specialize in a specific aspect of immunology.

The main branches of immunology include:

  1. Immunochemistry: Analyzes the components and molecular mechanisms involved in the immune system such as proteins (antigens) and antibodies and their interactions.
  2. Diagnostic immunology: Focuses on specifying the bond between antigens and antibodies in order to diagnose immune system disorders
  3. Clinical immunology: Involves the study of types of diseases caused by dysfunction or disorder of the immune system as well as the study of the process by which the immune system destroys transplants.
  4. Classical immunology: Deals with the relationships between pathogens, the body systems, and immunity, bridging the fields of medicine and epidemiology.
  5. Immunooncology: Focuses on harnessing the power of and enhancing the body’s own immune system to regulate, target, and combat cancer cells.
  6. Immunomics: Analyzes the response and regulation process of the immune system on pathogens and includes techniques of bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics.
  7. Immunotoxicology: Focuses on how chemicals (toxins) affect the cells and how the immune system reacts and responds to these aggressive chemicals.
  8. Immunopathology: Studies how the immune system responds to various organisms in the body.
