Lysis is important in DNA extraction because it is the first of three steps. When lysis occurs, the nucleus and the cell are split open, releasing DNA and proteins. This process uses mechanical disruption, enzymes, and detergents such as Proteinase K to dissolve the cellular proteins and free DNA.
