Distillation involves heating a solution to create vapors, which are then condensed to form a liquid or the distillate.  

Distillation is an ideal way to separate two liquids because every liquid has a unique boiling point. Different liquids in a solution have different boiling points and start to vaporize at different temperatures. The liquids can be separated by cooling and condensing the vapors formed at different temperatures in separate containers.
