Answer
Neurogenesis occurs in three regions in the mammalian brain:
- The subgranular zone (SGZ), located in the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus, an area associated with regulating learning and memory
- The subventricular zone (SVZ), located in the brain’s lateral ventricles, an area where new neurons are generated, before migrating to the olfactory bulb and becoming interneurons
- The amygdala, located in the medial temporal lobe in the brain, associated primarily with emotional processes
