What's the biological significance of osmosis?

Osmosis is essential for the survival of a cell. It plays a critical role in several biological processes including but not limited to: 

  • Maintaining the turgidity of cells
  • Regulating the transport of nutrients into the body and the elimination of metabolic waste products from the body
  • Stabilizing the internal environment of all living organisms by maintaining the balance between intercellular fluid and water levels 
  • Facilitating diffusion of water molecules between the cells and cell organelles
  • Helping plants absorb water and nutrients from the soil through the roots
  • Helping plants transport water and nutrients from the roots to the upper parts through the xylem
  • Facilitating germination of seeds
  • Maintaining the water content in plants despite continuous loss of water due to transpiration
  • Protecting plants against drought-related injury
  • Opening the stomata in plants
  • Controlling the dehiscence of fruits and sporangia
