What are the applications of forward osmosis?

Posted June 11, 2024

Answer

The three main applications of forward osmosis include:

Product concentration: Forward process is used to extract water from liquid products such as coconut water or coffee, leaving a valuable concentrate that retains the original flavors, aromas, and other qualities when reconstituted.

Wastewater concentration: Industrial facilities use forward osmosis extensively as part of their wastewater treatment process. In this case, forward osmosis is used to extract water from the effluent stream, leaving a concentrated waste product that is easier to dispose of.

Extracting clean water for reuse: The water that is extracted during both the above processes – product concentration and wastewater concentration – can be reused for other purposes or even recycled back into the production process.
