What is the difference between membrane potential and equilibrium potential?

Answer
Membrane potential refers to the difference in electric potential across the cell membrane of a quiescent cell. Equilibrium potential refers to the electric potential difference across the cell membrane that is in exact equilibrium with the concentration gradient for an ion. In cells where only one type of ion is able to cross the membrane, the resting membrane potential will equal the equilibrium potential for that particular ion.
