How does a cell maintain resting membrane potential?

Answer
Leak channels in the cell membrane facilitate the movement of sodium and potassium ions into and out of the cells. The movement occurs down the gradient, from a higher concentration towards a lower concentration. The combined leakage of ions down the gradient and the ion pumping action of the sodium-potassium pump helps cells to create and maintain a stable resting membrane potential.
