What is the composition of cytoplasm?

Posted June 17, 2024

Answer

The cytoplasm is composed of water, salts, and various organic molecules (e.g. sugars, amino acids, enzymes). The liquid part of the cytoplasm (cytosol) wraps around organelles within the cell. It's primarily water, making up around 80% of its composition. Within the cytoplasm there are structures such as the nucleus and mitochondria which are encompassed by membranes, keeping them separate from the rest of the cytoplasm.
