What is osmosis?

Posted June 11, 2024

Answer

Osmosis is a process by which molecules of a solvent pass from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane, equalizing the concentrations on either side of the membrane. This is a passive movement that occurs naturally without any expenditure of energy until equilibrium is reached. Any solvent, including gases and supercritical liquids, can undergo the process of osmosis.
