Answer
The cytoskeleton refers to a network of filaments or fibers found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, prokaryotic cells and archaeans. The cytoskeleton serves three main purposes. Firstly, it organizes the internal components, creating structure and organization within the cell. It contributes to the rigidity of the cell and provides mechanical support. Secondly, it establishes physical and biochemical connections between the cell and its surrounding environment. It does this by creating structural polarity and distinct functional regions within cells. Thirdly, it creates regulated forces that permit the cell to move and alter its shape. It supports specialized cell surface extensions including cilia, microvilli, and filopodia.
