Osteoclasts serve three important functions during bone resorption:
- Generate digestive enzymes and acids that break down old and damaged bone, making space for osteoblasts to lay down new, healthier bone tissue
- Release calcium into the bloodstream on degradation of hydroxyapatite
- Release amino acids into the bloodstream on degradation of collagen proteins
