What are the types of neurons in the spinal cord?

Posted December 6, 2023

Answer

There are three types of neurons in the spinal cord – sensory neurons, motor neurons and interneurons.

  1. Sensory neurons are found in the sense organs of the body, such as the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin. These neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, such as light, sound, and heat. These external sensory inputs activate sensory neurons, which transmit signals from the sensory organs to the central nervous system. Most sensory neurons are pseudounipolar. They have only one axon which is divided into two branches.
  2. Motor neurons control the body’s muscle movements by transmitting impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles in different parts of the body. They play a major role in the voluntary and involuntary movements of the body. There are two types of motor neurons – upper motor neurons, which travel between the brain and spinal cord, and lower motor neurons, which travel from the spinal cord to the muscles. Motor neurons are multipolar, each with one axon and several dendrites.
  3. Interneurons act as mediators between motor neurons, sensory neurons, and the central nervous system (CNS). They help in the smooth transmission of signals between sensory and motor neurons, facilitate communication between the neurons and the CNS, and form circuits of varying complexity. Interneurons are multipolar and found exclusively in the central nervous system.
