The two key measures of performance for cell separation methods are purity and recovery.
Purity - Purity is a measure of how many of the desired cells are present in the final isolated cell sample. It is a critical factor in assessing the effectiveness of cell separation because it determines whether the isolated cell population accurately represents the unique characteristics of the desired cell type, without any interference from other types of cells. Purity is expressed as a percentage of the total live cells.
Recovery - Recovery is a measure of how many of the desired cells from the initial sample were successfully isolated. It indicates the efficiency of the cell separation method and essentially addresses the question of how many of the desired cells are obtained through the cell separation process and how many are lost. Recovery is expressed as a percentage of the total available desired cells.
Other measures include yield, viability, function, and reproducibility.
