What are the factors that influence solubility?

Answer

Two factors that directly influence solubility are temperature and pressure. Temperature impacts the solubility of both solids and gasses, with a direct relationship to how easily substances dissolve. Higher temperatures cause the solid particles to move more rapidly, which increases their interactions with solvent particles and accelerates dissolution. Additionally, temperature can increase the amount of solute that dissolves in a solvent. Typically, as the temperature rises, more solute can be dissolved. Pressure influences the solubility of gasses in liquids but does not affect the dissolution of solids in liquids. When pressure is applied to a gas above the surface of a solvent, the gas molecules are driven into the solvent where they fill the gaps between the solvent particles. Polarity also influences solubility because polar solvents are effective at dissolving polar substances, while non-polar solvents are better at dissolving non-polar substances. Additionally, the solubility of salts is influenced by pH. Acidic salts tend to dissolve better in basic solutions (pH > 7) and less in acidic solutions (pH < 7). In contrast, basic salts are more soluble in acidic solutions (pH < 7) and less soluble in basic solutions (pH > 7). Neutral salts, however, are not significantly affected by changes in pH.
