What are the factors that influence saturation?

Posted May 29, 2024

Answer

One factor is temperature. Heating a solvent causes the molecules to gain energy and as a result they move faster. This increased movement makes them collide with solute particles more often and with greater force. Thus, the solute dissolves more quickly because the solvent molecules effectively break apart and surround the solute particles. Another factor is pressure. When pressure rises, more gas molecules enter the liquid, enhancing their concentration in the liquid phase. This increase in concentration drives greater dissolution of gas into the liquid, effectively raising solubility. Thirdly, increasing the surface area of the solute by grinding or crushing it can increase the rate at which it dissolves and the overall saturation of the solution.
