Are Annexin V-FITC+/PI+ cells classified as late-apoptotic cells or necrotic cells?

Cells that stain Annexin V-FITC+/PI+ can be either late-apoptotic or necrotic.

Annexin V-FITC/PI staining can be used to distinguish late apoptotic and necrotic cells from early apoptotic cells, which stain Annexin V-FITC+/PI-. However, since both late apoptotic cells and necrotic cells stain Annexin V-FITC+/PI+, the two cannot be distinguished using this method.
