Problems with the neurons or neuroglia can cause a wide range of diseases and disorders including but not limited to:
- Alzheimer’s disease – characterized by confusion about place or time, disruptive memory loss, and difficulty planning or executing tasks
- Parkinson’s disease – symptoms include balance and posture problems, shuffling movements, rigid muscles and tremors
- Schizophrenia – characterized by inability to differentiate between reality and imagination and unregulated, inappropriate emotional responses
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – marked by inattention, impulsivity, excessive hyperactivity, and executive functioning difficulties
- Major depressive disorder – marked by loss of enjoyment in activities, feelings of worthlessness, depressed mood, and suicidal thoughts lasting for extended periods of time
- Epilepsy – characterized by recurrent seizures
