What are the differences between nanoparticles and liposomes?

Posted August 26, 2024

Answer

Basis of differentiation

Liposomes

Nanoparticles

Definition

Spherical vesicles with one or more phospholipid bilayers that can encapsulate hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs

Solid lipid structures with a solid core and a lipid shell used primarily for encapsulating nucleic acids and other molecules

Size range

1-10 microns

Typically smaller than liposomes

Bilayer type

Posses one or more lipid bilayers (bilayer membranes)

Possess a single lipid monolayer

Stability

Generally less stable due to their structure

More stable, especially for nucleic acids

Core content

Aqueous core

Can be aqueous or non-aqueous
