What are the building blocks of nucleic acids?

Posted May 9, 2022

Answer

Nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acids. Each nucleotide is a composite organic molecule made up of a nitrogen base, five carbon sugars and at least one phosphate group. RNA (Ribonucleic acid) and DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), which are two types of nucleic acid, are essentially polymers made of long chains of nucleotides. In DNA, the sugar in the nucleic acid is made up of the compound deoxyribose  and the bases used are adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. In RNA, the sugar in the nucleic acid is made up of the compound ribose and the bases used are adenine, cytosine, guanine and uracil in place of thymine.
