What are the applications of lipid nanoparticles?

Posted August 26, 2024

Answer

One main application of lipid nanoparticles is drug delivery. LNPs are used to deliver mRNA vaccines by encapsulating the mRNA and facilitating its delivery into cells. LNPs can also be used in cancer treatment, as these nanoparticles offer better bioavailability and targeted delivery of anticancer drugs compared to the drugs in their free form. These nanoparticles are also a novel method for delivering genes in gene therapy, as they can carry both nucleic acids and proteins. Another application of LNPs is their use in diagnostics, as they can be used as contrast agents in MRI or ultrasound to improve the clarity and specificity of images.
