There are various applications of CRISPR/Cas9. It can be applied to identify mutations and incorporate specific therapeutic genes into human cells, aiming to fix disease-causing mutations and lessen associated symptoms. Additionally, CRISPR-Cas systems are used to develop genetically modified cell and animal models for a wide range of human diseases. These models encompass gene knockout, site-directed mutagenesis models and exogenous gene knock-in. Another application is to determine potential drug targets. This process involves using CRISPR-based genome editing to disrupt individual genes in cells or organisms and then observing the resulting phenotypic changes. This technology is also used to investigate the roles of genes associated with cancer. It does this through the production of genetically engineered cell lines and animal models which mimic the genetic alterations observed in human cancers. Researchers can use CRISPR to introduce specific mutations or gene deletions into cancer-associated genes in cell lines or animal models, allowing them to study the outcomes of these genetic alterations on tumor initiation, progression, and response to therapy.
