Can mutations occur in the nucleus?

Posted July 12, 2023

Answer

Yes, mutations can occur in the nucleus. Mutations can arise spontaneously or be induced by various factors such as exposure to mutagens or errors during DNA replication. Mutations can occur in any region of the DNA including coding and non-coding regions. The consequences of mutations depend on the location and nature of the mutation. Chromosomal mutations occur when a long segment of DNA is inserted, deleted, or moved from one chromosome to another. For example, Down syndrome typically results from the presence of one extra copy of  chromosome 21. Genetic disorders such as sickle cell disease or cystic fibrosis arise from mutations in specific genes that alter the function of the nucleus.
