Answer
Reporter genes are the genes incorporated into genetic transfection or transformation together with transferable genetic material to indicate whether the gene transfer has been successful. LacZ is a frequently used reporter gene, encoding for the protein beta-galactosidase in E. coli, which appears blue when E. coli is grown on a medium containing X-gal analog.
