Lactose (Also known as: (+)-Lactose, .beta.-Lactose, 4-(beta-D-Galactosido)-D-glucose, 4-O-beta-D-Galactopyranosyl-D-glucose) is a white hard crystalline powder. It is present in the milk of all mammals, including humans. It is often used as a nutrient in preparing modified milk and food for infants and convalescents, and for other uses within the food industry. It is absorbed via ingestion.
