Why may the real yield of ATP be lower?

Posted June 6, 2024

Answer

The estimate of 30-32 ATP from the breakdown of one glucose molecule is considered an upper limit, and the actual yield may be lower. This is because some of the intermediates produced during cellular respiration can be redirected to other metabolic pathways within the cell, reducing the overall ATP production.
