Where does photosynthesis take place?

On a molecular level, photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plants. All chloroplasts contain chlorophyll and are encompassed by a double membrane. Chloroplasts also have a third inner membrane known as the thylakoid membrane, which creates long folds inside of the organelle. These organelles are located in the mesophyll of leaves. Thylakoids are found within the chloroplast, and contain the chlorophyll which functions to absorb colors from light to generate energy. On a physical level, photosynthesis primarily occurs in the leaves via the Calvin Cycle. The light absorbed by the thylakoids is utilized to convert the CO2 absorbed by the leaves into carbohydrates. This creates the end products of glucose and oxygen. Photosynthesis also takes place in the stems, although to a lesser extent than in the leaves.
