When does DNA demethylation occur?

Answer
DNA demethylation occurs during the preimplantation embryonic stage following fertilization and involves both active and passive mechanisms. The active demethylation in the male pronucleus occurs independently of DNA replication, while the passive demethylation in both paternal and maternal chromosomes occurs as a result of DNA replication without maintenance of methylation marks.
