What's the significance of equilibrium potential?

Answer
Equilibrium potential is significant because it helps determine the direction and magnitude of ion movement when channels for that ion open. A positive equilibrium potential is necessary to prevent Sodium (Na+) ions from the extracellular fluid entering the cell. Conversely, a negative equilibrium potential is necessary to prevent K+ ions from leaving the cell and to stop Chloride (Cl-) ions from entering the cell.
