What's the difference between SMCC and sulfo-SMCC?

Posted September 5, 2023

Answer

Basis of differentiation

SMCC

Sulfo-SMCC

Functional groups

SMCC consists of two reactive functional groups: a maleimide group and a succinimidyl

Is an analogous compound to SMCC but with an added sulfo (sulfonate) group

Solubility

SMCC is typically used as a powder and needs to be dissolved in DMSO or DMF before use

Sulfo-SMCC is highly soluble in water and can be used in biological reactions without the need for organic solvents

Applications

SMCC is used to crosslink thiol-containing molecules with amine-containing molecules

Sulfo-SMCC is suitable for aqueous based reactions
