What qualities should a good genetic marker have?

Answer

A good genetic marker should have these qualities: 

  • Be selectively neutral
  • Be highly reproducible
  • Be largely polymorphic in nature
  • Should show codominant inheritance pattern
  • Occur frequently within the genome
  • Should not interact with other markers when using multiple markers simultaneously
  • Should be easy to detect using an easy-to-use, rapid assay
