A substance is classified as an acid if:
- Its pH value is less than 7
- The number of hydrogen ions on the substance is lower after a reaction (acids donate hydrogen ions)
A substance is classified as a base if:
- Its pH value is more than 7
- The number of hydrogen ions is higher after a reaction ( bases accept hydrogen ions)
