What is the process of diafiltration?

Posted April 19, 2024

Answer

Diafiltration is a process that removes or separates components from a solution based on their size using ultrafiltration membranes. It combines dilution and filtration by adding buffer solution or water to the concentrate, maintaining the concentration of target products while washing out unwanted compounds.

The process of diafiltration involves forcing a solution through a special filter by pressure or centrifugation. The filter, known as the ultrafiltration membrane, selectively retains larger molecules while allowing smaller molecules, like salts and solvents, to pass through. At the same time, buffer solution or water is added to the solution being filtered, which helps maintain the concentration of desired molecules while gradually washing out unwanted ones. This process effectively purifies the solution by removing or separating the components based on their size.
